Pembroke Castle to host a five-day diamond jubilee party
Pembrokeshire residents and visitors will have the opportunity to celebrate the upcoming Queen’s diamond jubilee in style thanks to a unique series of events to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s 60th year on the throne. Starting on Saturday, June 2, and ending on Wednesday, June 6, Pembrokeshire’s famous historical landmark will see everything from the screening of live international rugby, an array of family friendly events, the lighting of the Pembroke beacon and even outdoor cinema screenings. It will be the ideal way to celebrate and enjoy the specially created four day bank holiday weekend. A giant outdoor screen will enable castle visitors to enjoy all of the spectacular diamond jubilee celebrations throughout the week and it will also be used to screen Wales v Barbarians (KO 2 pm) on Saturday, June 2. Then on Sunday, June 3, the family entertainment starts. The giant screen will show the much anticipated Thames diamond jubilee river pageant, when 1,000 boats from across the UK will travel the Thames headed by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh who will travel on the Royal Barge ‘Gloriana’ which will form the centrepiece of the flotilla. Castle manager Jon Williams explained: “There will be loads to do all day with circus workshops, magicians, face paining, bouncy castles, balloon modelling and the Knights of Longshanks who will be here all weekend entertaining the crowds, and all of the entertainment will be part of the entry price.” On Monday, June 4, the family entertainment will continue all day with the addition of the Samba Doc Band who will not only be performing but will also be holding workshops and asking visitors to try it for themselves. A tug of war competition will see local youth organisations go head to head, and the evening’s entertainment will be started with a parade of standards from various local organisations. Then at 8 pm, the BBC diamond jubilee concert will be shown live from Buckingham Palace when artists such as Paul McCartney, Shirley Bassey, Tom Jones and Elton John will be performing. The climax of the evening will be the lighting of the Pembroke beacon on the castle battlements. It will be one of a network of over 2,000 beacons across the UK and it will be started after the Queen has lit the national beacon. Jon said: “The evening should be great fun and the atmosphere in the castle will be electric as the sun goes down and the concert starts. We have worked very closely with the town council to stage the events and the lighting of the beacon and I hope that it is something that the people of Pembrokeshire will see as a fitting way to mark such a historical occasion.” Then the following day, Pembroke Castle will be transformed into an outdoor cinema with recent blockbuster Warhorse being shown at 6.30 pm on Tuesday, June 5, and family favourite The Lion King shown at 6.30 pm on Wednesday, June 6. The events will be sponsored by Valero and have been put together with the help and support of Pembroke Town Council and will be a perfect occasion for the local community to get together share the historic occasion. Jane James, Valero’s manager for policy, government and public affairs, said: “Valero is delighted to support Pembroke Castle’s diamond jubilee celebrations, which we know will be great fun for the whole community.” Pembroke’s town clerk Hugh Colley commented: ”The ancient town of Pembroke is extremely proud of its strong royal connections as King Henry VII was born in Pembroke Castle. I hope the weather is kind to us and the public will come along to enjoy the events to commemorate the diamond jubilee.” Normal admission prices will apply during the week with the exception of the Sunday, June 3, and Monday, June 4, where the entry price will be £8 per adult, £6 per child (five-15 years) and £6 for seniors (65+). Castle members will receive a £2 per ticket discount on these days. There is also a five-day pass available for those who wish to attend all of the events, these are £20 per adult and £14 per child (five-15 years) or senior (65+). Advanced booking is advised to avoid disappointment and tickets are now available online at www.pembroke- castle.co.uk or by calling in at the castle gift shop.
