Last Sunday, sportsmen from across the county gathered at Lawrenny Cricket Club to take part in the inaugural Lance Osborn memorial six-a-side cricket tournament.
Lawrenny, Cresselly, Lamphey and St. Ishmaels Cricket Clubs all entered teams, along with the representative sides: Brad’s Team, The Nomads, Autumn Leaves and The Roy Osborn 6.
The not-too-serious day of cricket commenced at 11 am in overcast, but dry weather conditions. However, as the day progressed, the rain swept up the estuary, and even when it became almost impossible to see, batsmen and fielders, everyone agreed to play on.
The Plate Final was played out between Lawrenny CC and Autumn Leaves (representing Lance’s former work colleagues), with the latter finishing as victors. This preceded the main event, the final of the Memorial Shield between Cresselly CC and The Roy Osborn 6 (representing Lance’s family). Despite worsening weather conditions, Cresselly CC won through to claim the silverware, with Ashley Murdoch (The Roy Osborn 6) being voted man of the match.
Afterwards, the players all retired to the clubhouse for the drawing of the raffle and a post tournament celebration. The raffle was generously supported by many local businesses who readily gave prizes.
Everyone agreed that it had been a great day and pledged to return next year in hopefully much better weather.
